In spite of battling rain and mud, and on-the-go drawing revisions, the TAS team headed by general superintendent Rene Treviño met their deadlines at the Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion in The Woodlands.
Damages sustained by Hurricane Ike in September spawned Pavilion renovation and expansion that began in December. The Pavilion renovation completed with the new season kicking off on May 1 with the Dave Matthews Band and Kenney Chesney. Located on the side and base of a hill, the winter weather increased the challenges for those working at the site.
“The Pavilion is not a fun place to work in the winter,” said Ron Wisnoskie, project manager. “Access at the Pavilion is restricted by the hill and the existing structures. From our construction area you had to walk about 250 feet to get to the top of the hill. We started in December with 18 large footings to complete. In the seating areas we worked on retaining walls with concrete footings under them that required excavation of the dirt. On site we worked in winter rains that rolled down the hill and would seep into the work areas and make the hillside slippery to the point that we had to even more safety conscience while working. All concrete was pumped or placed by a tower crane including 830 linear feet for the retaining walls.
“This was a unique project in that we were working during the actual design process,” Wisnoskie said. “With the expedited completion date we were using drawings from the first two renovations and making ongoing changes. On one day we had five revisions while we were still working on the next step. General contractor Fred Grona, of Fretz Construction, directed the design sequence on site to keep us on track and up to date with the latest changes.
Kudos to our TAS team who “set the stage” for the Pavilion’s new season.
